About Us
Since the turn of the century the Musical Blades have been transporting
patrons into their hilarious world of witty dialog, and original maritime
songs.
Whether out on the road, at rehearsal, or in the studio, Musical Blades are a
close knit group of individuals that are collectively as comedic off stage
as they are on. And though many of their backgrounds in entertainment are completely
different from one another, somehow... it just works.
And who are these seven pirates? Glad you asked.
The Crew:
Captain Patch - Albert Hall
The 'original' Musical Blade and 'Captain' of the crew,
Albert is a veteran of the sound stage and studio and has performed in
venues throughout the Midwest for over 20 years. Albert began the
Musical Blades back in the fall of 2000 and has remained the primary
visionary for the band. He has many hats he wears along with his
Captain's hat, such as Producer, Writer, Artistic Coordinator and Promoter.
Chuey - David Levin
As the 'First Mate' and 'First Joker' of the crew,
David has more than pulled his own substantial weight helping with impromptu
situations, and comedic and musical writing. David's strong voice and
chaotic demeanor add much depth to the group. David has also highly regarded
and sought after as the host of pub sings at KCRF and STLRF. Chuey was
bound, gagged, and thrown aboard our pirate ship Fall 2006.
Saxton - Derrin Skorupan
Who is this "Bowler Hat" wearing chap, and why
does he keep thinking he's in the band? Is he a Pirate? We have no
idea, but he keeps showing up on stage at our performances, at our
rehearsals, and even our recording sessions(!?). Derrin has brought
input into song writing and brings a big, dumb, lovable character to
life...quite convincingly! After realizing he wouldn't go away, Derrin
was officially invited to join the crew in May of 2010!
Sven Helgrim - Joe Heller
Thumpin' the upright bass, and unlike anyone else in the
Blades, Joe actually works at Sea! When not a pirate, Joe works as a tug
boat engineer! He won't be with us at every show, due to his job, but he'll
be there when he can. Joe's contribution really came alive on the 2013 CD
"Up the Ante" and we look forward to him continuing to fill out the sound on
future endeavors. Joe was invited onboard in September of 2011.
Pappy McBeard - Mike Collier
What mysteries are hidden behind the epic beard?
We may never know. Mike AND his beard bring a wealth of knowledge and
talents to the crew. Mike is the crew's 'Engineer'. He has a
keen knowledge of how to do anything and everything and as such, is often
responsible for putting together various projects such as our CD box, our
merch box, and his very own instrument. Mike has the biggest set of
cajons we've ever seen, and between those and the various toys he brings to
the show, he is always a busy guy! Mike was drug onto the ship in
September of 2011.
Saucy Jack Tar - Michael Doss
Michael has been entertaining the musical scene in the midwest in various bands for 20 years, but the Musical Blades are his first foray into 'pirate music.' Michael has been an important piece in the direction of the band's music and aside from racking up numerous 'titles' in 'The Saucy Report', where he narrates through some of the stories and adventures of the crew, Michael has also fallen into being the 'music director'. Michael was hired after Patch saw him in another band and thought he 'looked piratey' and knew he would be willing to wear ridiculous clothing back in February of 2012.
Marty has been playing music in bands for many years in the area, and many of them have been with Michael. When Musical Blades were looking for a new tenor to add into the crew, Marty was deceivingly convinced that it would be a good idea for him! Marty brings a different sound and voice to the band that make wenches cry and scream...in a good way...and he plays various percussion to add to the overall fullness of the crew! Marty was brought onboard in August of 2012.
