Very Sneaky pirates...

We love technology! Various web programs allow simple pirates like us to keep tabs on the scurvy lot that frequent our home here at musicalblades.com. But we were a little shocked at what we found...

(Click here to see stats of the last 500 visitors to musicalblades.com, as of 12/21/09)

We're pirates, obviously, but we're land locked here in the Midwest, the Kansas City metro area to be specific, so we're not surprised to find that the majority of our visitors here to musicalblades.com are from Kansas and Missouri.

What we were surprised at is that the third largest group of visitors here to musicalblades.com are from France! Sweet!!

Though we've had online CD sales to nearly all of the US states and parts of Canada and the UK, we've only recently started seeing sales to places like France and Germany, and our digital downloads from online retailers like iTunes, amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, etc. are recently being purchased from all over the world.

To make a long story short, we couldn't be happier this holiday season to see that pirate enthusiast all over the world are digging our music!

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to everyone that's been supporting us, and a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!

So Yea, that ROCKED!!!

Thanks to all that made it out to Davey's Uptown last Friday night! It was a blast, and lots of pirates made it out. But here's the kicker, the bar owner LOVED US, and LOVED ALL THE PIRATES! So much in fact that we're being booked again!! No vampires this time (not that we have anything against vampires. *covers neck*). :P

Can't wait to see the pirates show up in mass once again!

As it stands now, it's looking like a February date. Perhaps Saturday the 13th, the day before Valentines Day! Tell your friends! Stay tuned....

In fact, all of us, except for Chuey, who had a long planned previous engagement, held an all day Musical Blades rehearsal and were not able to attend the event. Crap!

WHAT A SEASON!!

We just finished our seven weekend run at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. A big year at KCRF for us, as this was the first time since 2007 that we'd done a full run. By far, the best season we've ever had at KC... Period.

So yea, we had a busy year. Lots of shows, two CD releases, our new tenor, "Cheeks", and his wife had their first baby! We also put up our new web site, started online CD sales and digital distribution with itunes, amazon, napster, and many other online distributors. Plus our new facebook fan page, put up later in the year, is beginning to explode with a whole slew of new fans. Oh, and Salty Pete got a new guitar! And not just any guitar, oh no, Salty has a shiny new Rainsong. We as a group shopped around and decided on the perfect guitar to compliment, as well as accommodate what we do.

It really has been a great year for us, and as we head into our off season we wish to thank all of you for your support. We truly couldn't/wouldn't do it with out you... Thank you!

So what's next for the 'Blades'? Glad you asked ;)

Like I mentioned, it's our off season. But all this means is that we don't have any shows booked for a while. The main reason for this is that we're based in the mid-west, where it gets cold, and we typically do outdoor festivals.  Though there is talk of doing some warmer climate festivals, as well as some mid-west Irish/Pirate pubs... so stay tuned.

For the most part however, this is the time of the year that we start writing new songs and jokes for the show. We're hoping to release yet another new CD for the 2010 season. This year we'll also be working on producing a Musical Blades DVD. We have countless hours of footage from the '09 season that we'll be sifting through. Due to this tedious process we have no release date for the DVD but will post it here as soon as we do.

Also, based on hundreds of fan suggestions we are re-doing our merchandise section here at our official web site. Expect big things here... looking at probably a mid-November grand re-opening of the Musical Blades Merchandise Store.

Again, thanks to everyone that's supported us. Stop back in from time to time to see what's new!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

So on Sunday (10/11), during our second show of the day at KC Ren Fest, Cheeks, our tenor, received a phone call. His wife had gone into labor. So during the middle of the show Cheeks grabbed his guitar and gear and headed back to Tulsa, OK.

14 hours later (Monday morning around 2:30am), he and his wife now have a beautiful baby girl !!!  Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Cheeks!!! :)

KCRF - Week 2

We had a great time, as always, performing at KCRF this past weekend. But something happened at the end of the weekend that was just one of those special moments in time.

We had finished all of our "duties" for the weekend and some of us were beginning talks of where we should all go out to eat. But then a fan approached and asked us if we'd do a certain song for her (Sail Away), as it was her favorite song, and she'd not yet heard us perform it.

Of course the answer was "sure!". Problem was, by this time the group had started going different ways, one of which (Cheeks) was preparing his long drive back home to Oklahoma. Long story short, I (Patch) told her we'd do the song at the Pirate's Pub (which is our typical KCRF meeting place at the end of the day), and I struggled to get everyone round up... Which I finally did. :)

What started out to be just a one song performance, turned into an all request show of songs we don't typically do on stage. These songs... slower, prettier, harmony driven songs, which we love doing, but hardly ever do on stage due to there nature, were being requested one right after the other as the crowd kept growing larger. Songs like Pirate's Plea, Red is the Rose, Spancill Hill, Rollin Home, and Maracaibo!

The performance was given to an incredibly attentive and responsive audience, and was honestly perhaps the greatest ending to a performance weekend we have EVER had.

I just thought it was worth mentioning, and we the Musical Blades sincerely thank everyone that was involved.

Updates!!

Well if there's one good thing about this short break in performances (Kansas City Renaissance Festival begins Labor Day weekend Sept 5th), it's giving us time to do updates to some of our sites! :)

* MySpace (www.myspace.com/musicalblades1) - Lots of new pics and a couple of new songs off the new CD have been added

* Facebook (www.facebook.com/musicalblades) - Lots of new pics posted and we also now have a Facebook Fan Page . Still getting used to all the neat little things you can do with facebook, so bear with us.

* Twitter (www.twitter.com/musicalblades) - Did you know we had a twitter? Yep, we're tweet'in on the twitter! Sign up and receive important updates direct to your phone... or however you decide to use your twitter.

* Musicalblades.com - The latest updates will always come here first. So when in doubt visit us here at our official web site. This week we've added a few new comments to the home page, updated our scroller, updated our homepage mp3 player, added a few graphics throughout the website, added lyrics to the new CD in the lyrics section, and added a new page for the new CD. Oh, and speaking of the new page for the new CD, you can now pre-order High Sea's Drifter here online and receive it before the official street date release (KCRF - Sept 5, 2009).

Also Bilge Munky now has a few tracks off of our new CD and is airing them on Bilge Munky Radio (Monday nights 8-11 CST). See www.bilgemunky.com for details.

Last but not least we are soon to be a featured group at Floggings Will Continue (www.floggingswillcontinue.com), a free forum for pirates. Or as the website proclaims "A refuge for scum, villains and whores"

Stay tuned, lots more updates still to come...

Small but mighty!!!

These words best describe the Joplin Renaissance Festival/A Walk Through Time. We just got back from performing this faire and I gotta tell'ya, we had a blast.

We performed in the pub the entire time, both days (a dangerous place to keep pirates for an extended time I assure you), but what made this such a blast for us was the intimate setting and the repeat audience members. Many of which already owned our CD's and were shouting out songs we haven't performed in years, or in some cases had never performed live at all.

We did our best, with some of these, to a very forgiving audience who seemed to have as much fun as we did with our screw-ups :) Plus we met a lot of new people, as well as incredible performers that we were honored to share the stage with!

Anyway, thanks to the powers that be at the Joplin Renaissance Festival. We can't wait to see what next year brings!

Now then, looking forward... OUR FALL RELEASE CD IS FINISHED!!!

The official release will be the first weekend at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival (Labor Day weekend, Sept 5th), where we will be performing ALL 7 WEEKENDS, 5 SHOWS DAILY on the Washer Well Stage. If we receive the CD back from the duplicator before that date, we'll do a pre-release here online. Stay tuned....

Kansas City Renaissance Festival

Speaking of the new CD, which goes by the name of High Sea's Drifter incidentally, have you seen the new areas here at the web site? If not, notice that we now have a page dedicated to it in the Store area, complete with song samples. Plus, all the lyrics for this new CD are now up for your perusal in the lyrics section  :)

Until next.... Hope your summer is going great!!

Happy Independence Day!

The Fall CD release (High Sea's Drifter) is coming along nicely. We've been working on it non-stop since the Jeff City faire and will continue non-stop until the Joplin Faire (July 25, 26), at which time all recording should be done and we head in to the mixing/mastering process.

We have finished negotiations and will be performing all seven weekends at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival this year (seven weekends, beginning Labor Day weekend). KC Ren Fest is our hometown faire, and we only did two weekends there last year so we could visit/perform the St Louis Pirate Fest. And though bitter sweet, as we will miss St Louis this fall, we are looking forward to doing a full run again at KCRF this year. Look for us on the Washer Well Stage. Show times to come.

Though not set in stone, we're hoping for a first weekend at KCRF CD release. Stay tuned....

Happy Independence Day

Faire season ramblings

Yarr! What a great 2009 performance season we're having thus far! We started in Westin, MO at the Pirate Ball at O'Malley's Pub then hit the Wichita Ren Faire. We then headed to the Castle of Muskogee, OK for a couple of weeks and have recently returned from a month of weekend performances at the St Louis Faire where we had our best year ever!

We released our newest CD, "Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core" on Memorial Day at the St Louis faire and were sold out of our first run before the faire was over! (FYI: For those that have recently ordered this new CD via the website, we should have our next shipment here within a week and will ship your order ASAP)

Firstly we'd like to thank everyone that has attended our shows very much, and also for the great feedback we've had from so many of you on our new CD release! Indeed, some of it is a different style for the Musical Blades and we wasn't completely sure how well it'd be received. Our skepticism was quickly laid to rest. :)

So what's next? Well, after just having a weekend off from performing, this coming weekend takes us to Jefferson City, MO Renaissance Festival. We're looking forward to our return and can't wait to see everyone again!

We then buckle down in the studio to finish our Fall CD release (High Sea's Drifter) while we await the new "Walk Through Time" Joplin Festival (July 25 & 26). This will be a different kind of festival for us, as the beginning of the the faire is a Renaissance'ish setting, then leads in to the Old West, then in to in to a modern setting. We're told we'll be performing in the "pub", so come see the show if you can make it out!

Directly after Joplin we'll be frantically working to put the final touches on our upcoming Fall CD release. The biggest question all year has been where will the Fall CD officially be released? Well, though not set in stone, after recent phone conversations it seems we will in fact, this year, be doing the full seven weekend run at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival beginning Labor Day Weekend. Stay tuned as advancements arise.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming shows!

What's new?!

As most of you know, we're releasing two CD's this year. One in the Spring and one in the Fall. We're very excited about both, but the first one is indeed a bit different. Well, at least the first six songs.

If you don't know, these first six songs were written specifically for a concert that never took place. The concert, as some may recall, was called "Shipwrecked" . It was to take place in Columbia Missouri, and pirate bands, of all genre's, from all over the country, were scheduled to perform this all weekend "Pirate Woodstock" type of event. The Musical Blades (the renaissance festival act) was going to be the comedic group that would take the stage between setups of other "Pirate-Core" acts, while performing the songs that we're known for.

It was to be a Saturday night performance that "The Blades" (a rocked-up version of the Musical Blades) were to take the stage. The songs were written and arranged. The band was psyched and ready (complete with lead guitar, bass, and drums)! We even had a camera and audio crew lined up and ready for what seemed was going be the biggest Pirate event ever!

But alas, the concert was canceled due to insufficient funds. We don't blame the organizers of the event, they REALLY tried, but we did end up with several "Pirate-Core" songs that we never got to do anything with. Enter our new CD.....

"Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core" is a collection of the best Pirate-Core songs we had recorded. We then included four of the best "live" pub songs we had recorded, one of which is a song that won't be officially released until fall 2009 ("Gettin Saved"), that you may have heard us already performing out at faires.

Last but not least we then put three, brand new Musical Blades songs on it, as bonus tracks, that we're now performing out at festivals as well. We truly hope you like this CD!

OKRF Kicked Some Flogg'in Booty!!

We just got back from The Castle of Muskogee (Oklahoma Renaissance Festival). We knew we were going to have a great time, but words can hardly describe just how great of a time we had! We were welcomed with open arms (literally), and extremely well received by both patrons and cast.

On the Sunday of our last weekend there, we were given what we've been told is a very hard to receive award. The "Outstanding Castletonian" award. This was truly a surprise to us all, as we were just 'doing what we do'.

Thank you so much to all the patrons, cast, vendors and management. We are very honored to have been included at this wonderful festival.

We look forward to our return to The Castle in 2010 !

The season is upon us!! YARR!!!

First we'd like to just say Wichita was awesome!! It was one of the best times we've had at the Wichita Great Plains Renaissance Festival. Thanks to all of those that came out to see our show, we look forward to the next time we're out your way!

Next, Look for us at the Castle of Muskogee Oklahoma these next two weekends. We've not been there in years and we've heard so many great things have taken place, and how much the faire has grown since last we were there. Check your schedules for stage and times. We're looking forward to seeing everyone!

Next, next. Here's a surprise...

Behind the scenes we've been working on this little project for quite some time. As many of you know we're working on a new CD for a fall 2009 release, and yes we're still working on it (and it's coming along great), but this is different. ANOTHER new CD (spring 2009 release)! This is a collection of Pirate-Core (Rock), Live recordings, and three bonus tracks of brand new Musical Blades songs that just won't fit on the upcoming fall release.

Appropriately titled, "Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core". We're hoping to have this back from the duplicator by the first or second weekend of the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Festival. We can't wait for you guys to hear it!

The Pirate Ball ROCKED!!

We can only say that if you missed the first annual Pirate Ball (Saturday, Feb. 29, 2009), you REALLY missed out.  This was a SOLD OUT event, and if ever there was a place that a pirate ball should be held, it was here at O'Malley's Pub, an incredibly atmospheric venue. And with 99% of the patrons donning pirate attire it was truly a step back in time.

Thanks to all that attended, and thanks to Pirate Trading Company for hosting such and awesome event. We had a great time performing and the two belly dance troupes (Pavlov's Hips and Chuvani) were top notch. And of course Tullamore, veterans of O'Malley's Pub, who kicked the night off, were wonderful as always.

Thanks again and we hope to do it again at the Second Annual Pirate Ball! Or maybe this should be a bi-annual event.... hmm...

02/22/09

The Pirate Ball is almost here!!

We hope you got your tickets cause this event is now SOLD OUT! Pirates and Belly Dancers, this event will no doubt be the greatest pirate event that has EVER been held in the Kansas City area!

The Musical Blades will be headlining this incredible event but look forward to tons of surprises. Also we'll be debuting a couple of brand new songs off of our upcoming, Fall 2009 CD release.

See you there!!

Joplin Renaissance Festival is back on!! (well... kinda)

The following is from their web site...

Something Different!

This year we are going to take on a complete new approach to a Renaissance Festival.

A Renaissance Festival should be fun and exciting, correct? While having a great time we always need to make every effort to teach the public about the days gone by, correct?

What about the people that are not interested in the Renaissance Period? Sad to say, those people do exsist.

This year we will involve those people!

In July we will transform Carterville, Missouri into a "Living History" community. Explore with us the Renaissance days, to the 1800's. the 1900's and all the way to today. Each area with it's own entertainment, vendors and attractions.

So there you have it. And the Musical Blades will be there!

This event is to be called "A Walk Through Time", and will take place July 25th and 26th. Check out their web site.

01/24/09

After a grueling, month long of auditions, the new tenor for the Musical Blades is... "Cheeks" aka: Ed Miller. Ed brings to the table a great voice, and is well versed in several instruments.

Now begins the cruel, grinding punishment of teaching him our library of music. If he makes it out alive you'll be able to see him at all of our upcoming performance dates, as well as hear him on our upcoming CD.

Speaking of our upcoming CD, you should know it's coming along nicely. We've got 20 songs written thus far, and it seems new ones just keep getting introduced. The CD's only going to fit about 15 or 16 of'em, so we'll be, obviously, choosing the best ones to go on it. Which is going to be tough because we're incredibly happy with everything so far.

No release date has been set for the new CD, we're going to make sure it's perfect first, but expect a late season 2009 release.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming shows. It's 2009, GET YOUR PIRATE ON!!!

01/06/09

Bad news Joplin audiences. What turned out to be a great faire last year will not be repeated in 2009. Indeed the economy has paid its toll to a promising young faire. The Musical Blades, as well as all other acts, will not be performing this year due largely to the economy. The following was sent to us via the festivals owner...

Over the past few months I, like most everyone else, have been watching the state of the economy and the employment situation in the world. 2008 was a very bad year economically for Lane and I, and so far 2009 is not looking much better. It costs a small fortune to put on a festival. We lost a huge sum of money last year, due to many factors, and just cannot do that again this year.

Over the last three days I have received email from numerous persons informing me that they cannot attend JKRF 2009 because of employment and/or financial situations. Sadly to say, we have lost our site acquisition, at least for the time being. More disturbing than that, we have had our financial backing withdrawn also. This was brought on for no other reason other than the current financial health of the backer.

Many times we need to do things that we have to do, not want to do. This is one of those times, and it is a very hard thing to do. I am informing everyone that as of today, we are cancelling all plans for a Renaissance Festival in Joplin for 2009.

The web site and the Yahoo! Group will be will be taken down later this week.

We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone, and hope that all understand.

We will miss everyone that we had the pleasure to work with, as well as perform for. Hopefully a brighter future will bring us all together again.

Check our web site for upcoming performance dates.

12/24/08

Due to time constraints and a very demanding mundane job, Clint Glidewell (aka: Panama) has regrettably, and unfortunately  resigned his position in the Musical Blades.

Clint is (was) a very educated 'pirate', with many college degrees that has finally landed him an opportune position in the work force and simply has not recently, nor will he in the foreseeable future, have the time to contribute to the Blades.

There are no hard feelings, we all saw it coming, and we wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. He will be missed.

That being said the Musical Blades are presently holding open auditions for a strong tenor who is comfortable with harmonies. Our hope is for this new addition to also be versed in some type of musical instrument (ie: Guitar, Mandolin, Doumbek, Violin/Fiddle, Etc.) to even further round out our sound. If interested, and in the Kansas City area, please e-mail us.

The Musical Blades continue forth stronger than ever! We now have 12 songs written for the new CD (you guys are going to love these), and we've already started booking for the new year (see side notes on upcoming performance dates). Also our new dot com web site is getting a great response. Thank you guys!

Notice you can now also order songs individually on our web site via amazon.com. See our store section.

So from all of us, to all of you, a very Merry Christmas and a piratey New Year!

- Musical Blades

12/5/08

Once again mates, our off season is upon us. We take advantage of these cooler months to spend a little more time with our families, write new songs and material, and, as promised, put together a brand new web site! One that will be updated, as often and as soon as new information or material becomes available.

We hope you take the time to have a look around the new site.  Let us know what you think, and by all means, let us know if you think something should be added, or if we goofed somewhere.

The Bilge Munky review is in for our Fall 2008 release 'Piratically Incorrect'. Bilge once again pulls no punches, and tells how he really feels. Luckily for us, about this release, he feels pretty good! :) Bilge has a certain talent for summing up, in words, a particular grouping of music. Check out his review!

By the way, we've got a new gig coming up! Join us February 28, 2009 for the Pirate's Ball! Here's a snippet from this piratical event...

Oh, and we should also mention that we've now got the makings of about seven new songs for the next CD. We're still a long way from having anything ready to release yet, but the writing is coming along great and the new songs are sounding awesome! If all goes right we're probably looking at a late Spring/Early Summer 2009 release date.

That's it for now, hope you like the new web site! Happy Holidays!

It takes awhile for everything to get digitalized and added, but our new CD release, Piratically Incorrect (as well as our last CD 'Full Frontal Piracy'), is now available via iTunes, and will be available at all the most popular online digital download distributers soon! :)

Thanks to everyone that has made this new CD our biggest 'out of the gate' CD release to date!

Also note our CD's are available at www.cdbaby.com , www.musicalblades.com , and our brand new online distributer www.indierhythm.com . They can also be found at various independant music stores across the country and Canada.  Christmas stocking stuffers anyone? ;)

Over the cooler months also watch for a complete revamp of our dot com. We are now in the works of bringing our official web site (musicalblades.com) up to modern standards.

Also, if you've been following along this last year, you might remember that we were once booked to do a 'rock' show, at the now defunct 'Shipwrecked'. A large outdoor concert that was to include several 'pirate' bands from several genres. Well, as we were planning on doing this show we'd worked up several 'rock pirate songs' to perform there. We even featured a few of them on our myspace.

During our down season here we will be fixing those songs up, mastering them, and though they will probably not be on an upcoming CD anytime soon, we're planning to release them as digital downloads. So stay tuned!

Also, if interested, note that we are presently in negotiations with faires that we've not yet performed at. One on the East Coast, one up by the Great Lakes, one here in the midwest, and one in Canada!

Hope everyone had a great Halloween weekend! Until next... Wind in your sails!
