Auld Lang Syne (Old Long Since)
Another year has come and gone, and what a year it has been! By far the biggest year ever for Musical Blades! As we take a moment to reflect, first and foremost we wish to thank YOU, the ones that have made this our best year ever! A quick recap of "our" 2010...
To best describe OUR 2010, it's best to mention two event of 2009. The first, "Pirate's Ball" (Feb '09) at O'Malley's Irish Pub in Weston MO. It was here that we, for the first time ever as a group, performed behind microphones, in a pub environment... to a sold-out crowd! However, though being the incredible night that it was, we still didn't think that our brand of music and comedy would lend itself well outside a Renaissance Festival.
It wasn't until later that year when we were asked to be an opening act for a bazaar "Pirate/Vampire" show, with four other bands at Davey's Uptown in Kansas City (Dec '09), that we thought "hey, this might work". You see, the weirdest thing happened that night; we were initially scared to death to do this "Pirate/Vampire" show because it was just our little comedic/singing pirate group opening for these hard-core goth rock bands. We figured the bar would be packed with fans of these other bands and we'd be laughed and scorned off the stage! Instead, the opposite was true. The bar was indeed packed, but mostly with pirate fans, and after our set was finished, and the first goth-band took the stage, the venue was soon left nearly empty. The owner of Davey's Uptown, having never seen or heard of us previous to this, fell in love with us and signed us up immediately to do another show. We were left speechless. Enter 2010...
Our first show of 2010 was booked at Davey's Uptown (Feb), where we asked another Kansas City pirate group (The Jolly Rogers) to perform with us. This group of pirates started the whole mid-west pirate singing thing some 20 years ago at Renaissance Festivals, so we thought what better way to start off the new year, than with our first show of 2010 being Musical Blades and The Jolly Rogers. Again, to our surprise, another sold out crowd!
Musical Blades were then asked to perform, "by request of patrons", said the owner, at a new Irish Pub that had recently opened in Shawnee KS (a suburb of Kansas City). The name of this pub was Waxy O'Shea's, and on Mar 6th we again, to our surprise, had another sold out show, with employees at Waxy's having to turn people away at the door. As with Davey's Uptown, the owners at Waxy's fell in love with us and was ready to book us again, also wanting to book us at their Branson MO location.
The second annual "Pirate's Ball" came back around in March of this year, and like the previous year, it sold out too! We then went on to performed Waxy O'Shea's again in April, and note, all of these performances had taken place before our 2010, typical faire season even started! This was all new to us!
April 24th began our seven consecutive weeks on the road, performing at festivals in Wichita KS, Muskogee OK, and St Louis MO. During this time we also performed a private party for fans in Vandalia IL, and Maggie Malone's Irish Pub in Wentzville MO (St Louis suburb). On our return home we again booked and performed Davey's Uptown, then once again did another road trip, this time to perform at the Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival in Michigan! On our return home this time we performed The Beaumont Club in Kansas City, a much bigger venue than what we were used to. The event was called "Save the Treasure Chest", it raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research, and was our best show to date. The stage, the lights, the sound, and the venue itself was just incredible! What's more, just before we hit the stage at The Beaumont Club, we'd just come from an audition with America's Got Talent, which many of you know, as it was all over our facebook before we signed contracts. Though unfortunately, due to the contracts that we had to sign, we are not allowed to disclose any further information about the audition.
In August we made our way to Springfield MO, and the Barataria Faire, before returning to perform Waxy O'Shea's one last time before the seven weekend long Kansas City Renaissance Festival, where we met highly talented performing groups, "Beerside Scoundrels" and "Ogrot". Also during this time at KCRF, Waxy O'Shea's helped us sponsor seven consecutive Saturday-night "Musical Blades After Parties". Some of which we performed, most of which we were just able to hang-out with friends and fans after a long day at faire, which we don't often get to do. And during one such Saturday night we had the privilege to introduce our local friends and fans to a pirate band out of Michigan, friends of ours, "The Bawdy Boys", who also performed with us at KCRF the weekend they were in town. They were a BIG success at Waxy's that night, and equally fell in love with KC crowds!
Incidentally, look for a HUGE upcoming Kansas City area show with The Bawdy Boys and Musical Blades, as we'll be bringing them back to perform with us early summer 2011.
After KCRF was over we were invited to perform the Waxy O'Shea's in Branson MO (Nov), where we thought very few people knew us, but we were incredibly well received and played to a packed house. We then returned back home once again to perform a nearly sold out CD Release Party at Davey's Uptown earlier this month, where we also brought in Capt'n Black's Sea Dogs, a pirate group out of Springfield MO. And yes, somewhere during this busy year we were also able to record our new CD, "Modern Day Pirate" ;)
A couple of things that didn't happen in 2010, that we thought might, is that Musical Blades were being looked at to open a show for Jimmy Buffet, and again for classic rock band "Journey". Neither of which panned out, unfortunately, nor did either of these two groups end up performing Kansas City dates. And further, yet another event that didn't take place, due to politics not related to us, is our appearance on local television, "38 The Spot", that was suppose to take place just before KCRF. Oh well, you win some, you lose some :P
Needless to say it's been a crazy year, and especially in these hard economical times, that we are all going through, we are so incredibly appreciative of the kindness and support shown by friends, fans, venues, and especially to all of those that have fully jumped in to help us promote our group, as well as our shows, be it online or on the streets, or both. Thank you all so much!
But the year's not over yet... December 31st (New Years Eve) marks not only our last show of 2010, but also our first show of 2011. A year that we hope will surpass even this near perfect year for Musical Blades! Join us New Years Eve at Waxy O'Shea's (Shawnee, KS) for one last 2010 celebration, where...
"we'll raise a cup of kindness yet for Auld Lang Syne",
or,
"for (the sake of) Old Times"....
Also performing with us this night will be our friends, "Beerside Scoundrels", voted "best music act" KCRF 2010, and "Ogrot", voted "best stage act" KCRF 2010. This will truly be a night to remember.
A lot has changed in the past year or so, and even mainstream audiences, those that don't typically frequent Renaissance Festivals, seem to be enjoying the change, as well as our presence in mainstream venues. We've enjoyed a lot of "double-takes" as mundane patrons look to see pirates on stage, and end up sticking around for the entire show. :)
We've had an incredible year, we hope you have too, and we hope you'll all follow us into the new year and beyond where we'll continue to offer up surprises, always attempting to do things bigger and better than before. A sincere Happy New Year to everyone!

Thanks for your help!!
We are so fortunate to have friends/fans that have helped us through our piratical journey! It makes all the difference in the world to have others, instead of just ourselves, spreading the word about the existence of our little pirate band, as well as telling people about our upcoming shows, and sometimes dragging skeptical friends out to see us. :) You have know idea how many times we've had new faces approach us, saying things like, "My friend asked me to come out with her/him, and I had no idea what to expect... but I had a blast!!". Awesome. We so appreciate the help, thank you very much!
That beings said, in case you missed it, a couple of weeks ago we added a link, at the top and bottom of each page here on our website entitled "Help us Promote". Included on that page is graphics for upcoming shows, links to our upcoming shows "Event Page" on facebook that you can share on your facebook profile, myspace, blog, website, etc., and several other widgets; like a Music Player, a Show Schedule widget, and a widget where people can join our mailing list. All of which can be shared to help spread word about Musical Blades, and our particular version of piracy. Again, thank you!
2011 is going to be a great year, and it all starts New Years Eve at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub! Hope to see you all there!

In or around the Kansas City area?
Musical Blades CD's are now, not only available online, but also available at "The Treasure Chest", in the "The Legends" shopping center in Kansas City. The Treasure Chest is a store full of Pirate paraphernalia, including tons of Pirate Jewelry.... for that piratey soul on your Christmas list. Here's the exact address...
1811 Village West Pkwy, Kansas City, KS 66111 - (913) 499-7398
Incidentally, our CD's are also available at many other "independent" CD retailers across the country, unfortunately it seems, we are not privy to the names of each of these establishments. :\ ...but they're out there!
ALSO, we're looking to branch out even further, beyond Renaissance and Pirate festivals (which we love doing, and will continue to do by the way). For the past year and a half or so we've been performing at a lot of bars, pubs, and other indoor venues, which we are equally "loving". We've posted this question on our facebook, with a great response, but if anyone else knows of a good venue, anywhere in the country, or possibly even out of the country, that WE would fit in to, tell us about it! We'll research it and do our best to get in there! And if you really know the place good, tell the owner about us, and direct him/her to our website (musicalblades.com), that REALLY helps!
Again, have a great Christmas! Hope to see you all on New Years Eve at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub! See below for more details... And as we've mentioned before, it looks like a couple of other acts will be making an appearance on stage that night at Waxy's as well. Ogrot, the comedy troupe that made a HUGE impression at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival this year, and Beerside Scoundrels, winners of KCRF's, "Best Music Group 2010". It's going to be the best intro to a new year that we personally have ever been involved in!!
See'ya on NEW YEARS EVE!! Bring on 2011 !!!

BUT, there's also a VIP (Very Important Pirate) cover for $20 that not only includes the champagne and party favors, but also includes a full "hog roast" dinner! You know the party's on if there's a hog roast!! And yea, the VIP joke... I know, I can hear you all making fun of me on the other side of this computer screen... whatever! :P
So yea, now you know, Waxy O'Shea's (Shawnee KS Location) is the place to be this New Years Eve! And like with every show we do, your know there's always going to be surprises. Looks like we might have another act (or two) jumping in for a few songs as well.... stay tuned.
Also, and this is important, Bob Reeder, a genius in Irish Music, is also going to be performing during the afternoon at Waxy's. Bob has shared his music in pubs from New York to California, from Canada to Mexico on radio interviews and network TV. Bob's a friend of the band, an incredibly fun guy, and we encourage everyone to show up early to catch his act.
Pirates + Irish = Starting your New Year off right !! Call a cab, 1-800-TAXICAB (seriously, that's the number), designate a driver, or just be responsible. Just be there for our first New Years Eve show ever!! Check back soon for more information on this event....

Let the Piratey Christmas Season commence !!
Initially, ONLY our new CD release (Modern Day Pirate) was going to be discounted at our CD Release Party, taking place TONIGHT (Dec 4th) at Davey's Uptown (see previous BLOG post), but it's Christmas, and we've just decided... ALL of our CD's will be discounted at the show!
Have a great Holiday Season everyone! Stay safe, and if that guy at the mall steals your parking place... let him have it, bid him a Merry Christmas, and walk the extra 30 (or 100) feet to get that special tie for Uncle Bob. :)
See you at the show!!

Davey's Uptown THIS Saturday night! What to expect...
Thanksgiving's over, Black Friday's behind us,
Christmas and New Years are just around the corner. Hmm... looks like
it's time for a Pirate Concert!! This Saturday, December 4th,
will mark our first bar show in the Kansas City area since August, and
it just so happens to be a show dedicated to the release of our newest
CD, "Modern Day Pirate".
Helping us for this show will be Capt'n Black's Sea Dogs, a pirate band
out of Springfield, MO. Each band will be doing two sets each. Each band
will have discounted NEW release CD's.
Discounted tickets still available,
and full FAQ is also
available to answer any questions you may have about the show.
Davey's Uptown,
for those that have never been there, is , well... let me just quote one
reviewer when I say "the best damn dive bar in Kansas City!".
If Blackbeard, Sam Bellamy, Calico Jack and Captain Morgan were alive
today... umm... and had a Pirate singing group, THIS is where they'd be
performing! ;)
Hear the call all ye fellow pirates and pirates at heart, GET YOUR PIRATE ON this holiday season! Grandma Judith, Aunt Bee and Uncle Buck in town for the holidays? Bring'em with you and join us at Davey's Uptown THIS Saturday night, they'll never be the same! Doors open at 7:00pm!
Below I've compiled a few reviews I've found of the
venue...
-------------------------
Davey's drinks are strong, fair priced, and always made exactly the same
way, every time, despite the bartender on duty. Michelle has a true,
down to earth, honest and comfortable staff behind her. The bartenders
are rarely rude to anyone (unless of course, you deserve it) The
atmosphere is just great for music, and it really drags you into the
sound and style of the venue. The sound system is excellent, and is
always being upgraded, remodeled, and tweaked for optimum performance.
The stage has just been expanded. Let's be fair, it's an old building,
you can expect some dirt, drafts and some rocky places. But that's the
charm, and that's why we love this place so much.
I believe the term "dive bar" to be one of the most
overused these days, but Davey's qualifies. It's been in that spot
seemingly forever. The neighborhood has changed a lot, Davey's not so
much (some of the same band stickers grace the walls of the foyer).
Dives cannot be contrived. Rule number one. Davey's is the real deal.
-----------------------------
At first glance, the bar sticks out as a little kooky, but the crowd of
regulars is always hospitable. It's actually a rather cozy place,
creating an ambience all its own with off-kilter bar stools, cracked
vinyl booths and cheap cans of Old Style. Davey's has poured cocktails
since 1925, when it was done on the sly because of Prohibition. It's
been at its current location since 1950 and presently has a handful of
arcade games, pinball and free pool on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Regulars are used to visitors rambling in for the bands... the low stage
and great acoustics make this one of the best places in Kansas City to
get close to the action.
----------------------------
Great sound, super friendly and fun bar staff. Had an
amazing time close to downtown!
---------------------------
this was a nice, laid back,
divey bar full of those wanting to see live music and have a good time.
I dug the ceilings the most, cool 60's drawings of naked girls riding
champagne bottles and other drinking nostalgia. lots of history on the
walls, with band stickers, portraits, old posters reminding the rowdy
crowd of glory days.
-----------------------------
Bands and artists like the Wilders, Zeke, Big Four,
Bruce Robinson, Ann McCue (Puddle of Mudd, Hank III, Federation of
Horsepower) and many more have entertained at the Davey's Uptown
Ramblers Club. Always in the headlines for its great musical events,
Davey's is one of the best places in Kansas City to enjoy live music.
-----------------------------
Being nominated and voted 'City's Best' for many
consecutive years, as well as the Olympic Torch having passed outside,
that's a claim to fame very few venues can stake.
-----------------------------
it may be
a small dive bar but one of the few places in kc that still puts a good
amount of liquor in your drink and at a great price. decent place to see
live bands too.

Pirates + Christmas = Yo Ho Ho!
Tis the season! The holidays are just around the corner now, join us December 4th (less than 2 wks away) as we bring in the Christmas season with a Piratical BANG at our first ever CD Release Party! Discounted tickets available above, or Click Here for tickets and more information. This show will be held at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club in Kansas City, MO and will feature both Musical Blades, and making their Kansas City bar debut, Capt'n Black's Sea Dogs. As is typical with our Davey's Uptown performances, both bands will alternate, doing two 45 minute sets each, this time beginning with the Sea dogs. At the end of the night both groups will perform together. We're so looking forward to this show, and of course we'll be debuting our new CD "Modern Day Pirate", which will also be discounted specifically for the show.
So what else is new? Well, as many of you know, at the beginning of this year, we had two CD's go out-of-print. The first one was "Surrender the Booty", our first real recording effort, and though containing many songs we still do today we decided the actual recording, which didn't include many present members of the group, just wasn't up to par. All these songs will someday be rerecorded, but until that day we thought we'd offer these original recordings to everyone as FREE mp3 downloads!
The next CD that is no longer in production, "Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core", is a collection of songs that were written specifically for a "Pirate Rock Concert" that we were supposed to be involved in, but it never ended up taking place. It was a limited edition run, and once our stock ran out, that was it. This CD as well we are now offering, in it's entirety, as a FREE download!
Oh, and our photo gallery has just been updated as well, and now includes all the 2010 pics we could get our hands on!
Also, you may have noticed we've recently been sold out of a couple of different CD's here at our website (Full Frontal Piracy and High Seas Drifter). Our stock has now been replenished and they are both once again available in the Store section!
Have a great holiday season! Hope to see you all at the Davey's Uptown show! Check back soon, as we will be announcing a Musical Blades New Years Eve show!!
11/12/10
It's finished, it's really finished!
See, and some of you thought maybe we were just joking, that we didn't actually have a new CD coming out... ;) So why'd it take so long? Well, we've been busy. Literally. This has been the busiest year yet for Musical Blades. In fact, we've had more weekends performing than we've had weekends off, which is a good thing, and next year looks even busier, but it slowed the recording process down to a crawl. That being said, and without further adieu, we give you our new Fall 2010 CD release "Modern Day Pirate". You're going to love this new CD! Take a look...
Don't forget, all of you fellow pirates and pirates at heart, we'll be performing next on November 13th at the original Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub in Branson, MO. This gig is going to be awesome, and it's our first time ever performing at this location! Tell all of your friends, and even those that aren't YET your friends, that the Pirates are coming to lay siege to the cowboy capital of the world, Branson, MO! ;)
And then it's on! December 4th we'll be making our way back home and performing at our first ever CD Release Party at Davey's Uptown, and turning it into a "DOUBLE" CD Release Party as we bring with us, guest Capt'n Black's Sea Dogs, who will be dishing out their own new CD of piratey goodness, entitled "Tales of the Black Dog". This event is going to be off the piratical chain, and it looks like Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum will be sponsoring the event! Two new CD's; "Modern Day Pirate" and "Tales of the Black Dog", both bands will be giving a discount on their new CD for this special event! Just in time for a Very Merry, Yo Ho Ho, Pirate Christmas!! Discounted tickets available NOW!
Oh yea, and we're cooking up something for New Years Eve too! And maybe something mid-December. Stay tuned....
"You know, I'm really starting to like this whole being a pirate thing. I think after this post is over, I'll continue being a Pirate..."
10/20/10
Discounted advance tickets now available!!
If there's one thing we enjoy, it's performing with other musicians. That's about all we did every morning before our shows in the Pirates Pub at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival these past seven weekends, as well as several times at our after-parties at Waxy O'Shea's, and you know, there's no difference when we're out on the road. And out on the road is where we meet many other groups that Kansas City audiences may never get a chance to see. So what do we do? We bring'em home with us! This is a new trend of course, as the first time we actually did this was with The Bawdy Boys (Detroit MI), a couple of weeks ago, but fans of pirate/irish music packed the house at Waxy's that night, and between that and the last KCRF pub sing, it is by far our best memories of the past two months. Well, we're doing it again...
December 4th, 2010 we will be bringing to town Capt'n Blacks Sea Dogs! This band, out of Springfield MO, has several veteran musicians, and much like the Musical Blades, walk a fine line between Modern and Traditional music, often bouncing back and forth. And they, like us, have a brand new CD! (Though of course ours wont be available until the night of the show). This is a Double CD Release Party, and we are stoked!! This is going to be an incredible night with tons of both familiar, as well as BRAND NEW songs, and tons of surprises! We hope everyone will join us as we bring in the Christmas Season with a Piratical BANG!!
If you've ever been to one of our "bar shows", you know it's a lot different than our RenFest shows, a little more bawdy perhaps (of course), but just in general, a LOT different! We think you're going to have a blast at this show, and really dig the Sea Dogs as well. This event takes place at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club, KCMO, Dec. 4th, 2010.
Once again, we are forgoing that insane Ticketmaster convenience charge, and giving a discount on top of that. Tickets are NOW AVAILABLE, right here, at musicalblades.com. Click Here for tickets and more information
Next up, Branson MO. Musical Blades will be performing at the original Waxy O'Shea's on November 13! Can't wait!
Hope to see you at a show!
10/18/10
AND THE WINNER IS... (and KCRF 2010 is over :(
The winner of this very high quality chain-mail shirt, hand made with 56,000+ miniature rings of stainless steel, is...
Stephanie M. Davis! Ticket #498291 - Congratulations, you WON! Stephanie's e-mail was provided on the ticket as well, so we will also be sending her notice so that she may claim this awesome Chain-Mail blouse! If for some reason, we don't hear back from Stephanie, we will draw from the ticket jar again and announce a new winner.
For providing this Chain-Mail shirt, we would like to thank Scaling Barriers, a not for profit organization that provides musical instruments to less fortunate children via their schools. A very worthy cause that helps bring music into the lives of children that otherwise may have never gotten the opportunity. Visit their website for more information on this awesome organization.
Now then, WOW... That pretty well sums up the 2010 season at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. We just came off of the last weekend and, as expected, there was tons of laughter and tons of tears, but we truly had an AMAZING time! Nothing quite compares though to the final day's Pub Sing where Musical Blades were spoofed by what seemed like every singing act at the Faire, including the girls in MentalPause! There were "Musical Blades" everywhere, and two of the groups (Ogrot and Beerside Scoundrels) got together and did a parody of our song "Gettin Saved". Even Bloodbeard from The Jolly Rogers stepped in to spoof Capt. Patch. Incredible. That's one pub sing we wont soon forget... Thanks to everyone!
So what's next? Well we're taking the next three weeks off to finish up our CD, then we're off to do a Saturday night performance in Branson, MO at the original Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub. We can't wait to see all of our friends again down around that area! We meet quite a few people on the road, many of them musicians/entertainers, and as we'll be down their way, you can expect to see Capt'n Blacks Sea Dogs at our Waxy's show as well. The Dogs will be getting on stage to do a few songs, and who knows, maybe some other entertainers will join us as well! It's going to be fun night, plus it's our first time EVER performing at this location, so we hope lots of you can make it out! (we'd sure like to make a good first impression :)
And speaking of our new CD (Modern Day Pirate), this project has been quite the journey for us indeed. With the last seven weekends spent performing at KCRF our time to work on it has been very limited. So yea, sorry to everyone that we didn't get it out in time to release it at the Faire. As an apology for our tardiness, we'll be offering a $5 discount the day it's released, just $10 (versus the standard $15). Okay.... so when's it going to be released?
Our official release date will be at our CD Release Party, December 4th, 2010 at Davey's Uptown (Kansas City, MO), where we will be bringing in the Christmas Season with a Piratical Bang! Capt'n Black's Sea Dogs, out of Springfield, MO, will be performing with us for our first full show together EVER!! We told them of our plans to offer our new CD at a discount, and the Dogs, being the scurvy pirates they Rrrr said, "we'll do the same thing with our new release as well, and make it Rrrrr "Kansas City" CD Release Party!" So there you have it, two new releases, 10 bucks each! Brand new piraty goodness! A double CD release party! BLADES... DOGS... together for our first show ever! This event is going to ROCK!!! We can't wait!
Family in for the holidays? Give'em a Pirate Holiday!!... ("Pirate Holiday?"... hmm, there's a song in there somewhere...)
Tickets to our
CD Release Party go
on sale this Wednesday, 10-20-10, RIGHT HERE at musicalblades.com
($8 in advance / $10 Day of Show).
More performance dates and news coming soon!
10/12/10
One more weekend of KCRF!
Last weekend was a blast! Perfect weather at the festival (well, until Monday's "kids day" at the festival. Then we had a little rain... as well as little crowds... but those that were in our crowds got a chance to hear a lot of the stuff we don't typically do, as well as some new stuff... Maybe not a rehearsed version of these songs, but they got to hear it ;) and if you missed the after-party at Waxy O'Shea's last Saturday, you really missed a good time. This was the most incredibly, off the chain, bawdy night at Waxy's we've ever had (perhaps there's ever been), and our friends (The Bawdy Boys) from Detroit... Ireland, were very accepted (We told you guys this was a fun band!). And of course, Musical Blades got up to do a set of our songs as well! Thanks to everyone that made it out! You guys/gals rock!!
Now then, this coming weekend... All good things must come to an end. The Kansas City Renaissance Festival will be finishing up it's 2010 season, and laughter and tears will ensue I'm sure. On the plus side, this is traditionally the weekend that things get crazy, and stage acts tend to take their shows just a little bit further than usual. Improvisation becomes the standard, and it seems to always become the craziest weekend of the run. Oh, and whatever you do, don't miss this weekends Pub Sing at KCRF (especially Sunday). Just trust me on this one... ;)
Hope everyone's had a wonderful year so far! After the faire is over we take the next three weekends off to finish up our new CD, then we're off to Branson, MO to perform at the original Waxy O'Shea's! When we come back we'll be getting ready for the Thanksgiving/Christmas season with our "Pirate Christmas" performance with Capt Blacks Sea Dogs, an awesome pirate band out of Springfield, MO, on Saturday Dec 4th. The event will take place at Davy's Uptown Ramblers Club in Kansas City, Missouri, and will be our official CD Release Party, as well as the Sea Dogs KC CD Release Party for their new CD. It appears this performance will also be sponsored by Capt Morgan's Spiced Rum, how cool is that?! Tickets go on sale soon, right here at musicalblades.com
And let's not forget about the Musical Blades Give-A-Way. Next Monday (Oct 18th), here at musicalblades.com, we will be announcing the winner of this awesome Chain-Mail shirt (seen in left column, and here). We've had this shirt displayed at nearly every show and will continue to do so through this weekend, which is the last weekend for you to sign up at one of our shows to win it. A very high quality piece, click for more info.
We've got several other plans working... Let's finish 2010 off with a bang! Pirate style!!! Wow, what a great year it's been!! See'ya soon!!
10/8/10
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!! October 9, 2010
Musical Blades & The Bawdy Boys
We've been having our
Musical Blades after-party every Saturday night during the Kansas City
Renaissance Festival Run at Waxy O'Shea's, but this weekend in
particular is The Musical Blades after-party you wont want to miss!
We will be performing with our pirate friends from Detroit, The Bawdy
Boys! If you're in or around the KC area, we'd love to have you join us!
This is going to be a great night!!
9/27/10
OUR NEW CD! (continued)
So yea, we were originally hoping for a 4th weekend KCRF release (Sept 25th), then we were hoping for a 7th (last) weekend KCRF release (Oct 16th), and as excited as we are for all of you to hear this new CD, we've decided we just can't release it until it's right... and it's just not there yet.
We're very close to finishing it, the problem is, after we're finished, it still takes around three weeks in production time to get it duplicated. So even if we do have it finished before the Kansas City Renaissance Festival is over, we simply won't have it back in time.
Our release date is, a very open, Fall 2010. It will be available here at our web site as soon as it's finished and we have it in our hands, and the official CD release party will be held at Davey's Uptown, in Kansas City, MO, Dec. 4th, 2010 (Note: Fall last until Dec. 20th... we checked ;).
On a side-note, we will performing at Davey's Uptown (12/4/10), for the aforementioned CD release party, with Capt'n Black's Sea Dog's. We're sooo looking forward to performing with these scurvy blokes once again!
It is our intention to bring several different piratical acts to the Kansas City area to perform with us at various venues over the course of this next year. Groups that we perform with out on the road, but many locals to the KC area might never otherwise get a chance to see.
Our apologies to all those that have been asking for the new CD, and to those that hoped we'd have it out before the KC faire was over... we tried. We'll make it up to you. Stay tuned... ;)
Don't forget, three more weekends at KCRF! See us on the Seafarers Beer Garden Stage, 5 shows daily (12, 1, 2, 3 and 4). We're also performing daily there at the Pirate Feast, The Royal Smoker, the Pub Sing, and opening and closing gate! And of course we'd love to have all of you out to the "Musical Blades After Party", every Saturday night after faire at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub in Shawnee KS. The last four Saturday nights there have been a blast! Oh and don't forget our Pirate band friends from Michigan (The Bawdy Boy's) will be performing there during our after-party on Saturday Oct. 9th... and yea, I'm sure we'll get up and do a few songs with them. ;)
See'ya there!!
9/17/10
OUR NEW CD!
No, it's not yet available, but it is getting closer and closer to its release date. Originally scheduled for a Fall 2010 release, and it will still make it, but we were hoping to have it out by 4th weekend, but as we do not want to compromise quality, this 4th weekend date will not be met. At this point we are hoping for an end of KCRF release. Thinking maybe sixth or seventh weekend (October 9th or 16th).
On the plus side, we think you're going to love this new CD! It's truly a collaboration of all of the styles you've come to expect from Musical Blades! We're working our butts off, it'll be out soon! :)
THIS JUST IN - It seems Waxy O'Shea's like's that we've been pimpin an after-party there on Saturday nights during the faire run. So, even if there is another band playing, and they have a door charge, simply mention you're there for the "Musical Blades After-Party" and you won't have to pay the cover!! How cool is that?! The next 7 weekends are going to be a blast!!
ANOTHER "THIS JUST IN" - 6th weekend of KCRF we've got some friends of ours coming in from Michigan. A pirate group named "The Bawdy Boys". They'll be performing at KCRF, probably even with us a few times, but on Saturday night (Oct 9) they'll be performing Waxy O'Shea's, and oh yea, we'll performing a bit with them. You're going to love this group!!
AND YET ANOTHER "THIS JUST IN" - We're all about helping charities every chance we get... trying to earn our way into Pirate Heaven, so to speak. ;) But this time we get to give something back to YOU! See the picture in the left hand column? Oh yea, that's a 56,000+ ring Chain-Mail shirt! And yea, we're giving it away! :) Click for details
8/28/10
Tis the season, for the Kansas City Renaissance Festival!
KCRF holds a special place in our little pirate hearts, for it's the Faire Musical Blades started at. It's also our hometown Faire. It's also one of a select few Faires that people from all over the country attend each year, and we're very proud to be part of it. It is for these reasons that KCRF is typically our official launching pad when we release a new CD. This year is no exception.
We will again be performing the entire seven weekend run, beginning Labor Day weekend! Join us for five shows daily on the Seafarer's Beer Garden Stage, as well as the end of the day Pub Sing on the Three Lions Stage. This year we'll also be performing at the Pirate Feast, which takes place at 1:30 daily.
Here's our official schedule - A couple of songs at morning gate (as always) - 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm on the Seafarer's Beer Garden Stage - 1:30 at the Pirate Feast - 4:30 at the Royal Smoker - 5:30 at Pub Sing... Whew.....
In addition, we would love for everyone to join us each Saturday night during the KCRF run for an after party at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub, in Shawnee, KS. The after party is just a chance for us to sit and chill with fans/friends at our favorite Irish Pub/Restaurant, and who knows, maybe bust into a song or three ;)
"Wait a minute... back up. Did you say NEW CD?!"
LOL, why yes we did. The new CD is entitled "Modern Day Pirate", and as of this writing is still being recorded. We're hoping to have it completed within the next couple of weeks, ship it off for duplication, and have it back in time for a fourth weekend KCRF release... fingers crossed. The new CD is host to several of the songs we've introduced to many of you at Bars, Pubs, Concerts, Parties and other Renaissance Festivals through out our Spring and Summer 2010 season. To name a few; Modern Day Pirate, Count Off, Whiskey in Pawn, Blow Ye Winds, Will the Circle be Unbroken, and The Ballad of Salty Pete. These, and a whole lot more (however many we can fit) will soon be available with this new release that we think you're going to love... I know we do! :)
The website release for this new CD will be concurrent with our faire release, so those not able to make the show can still get it, right here at musicalblades.com, for the same price as at our shows... and we'll eat the shipping. Expect a new section for "Modern Day Pirate" here at the website soon, as well as a complete listing of the new songs, along with their lyrics, in the Lyrics section (linked at the very top of each page).

Home away from home - Waxy O'Shea's

Join us once again, this Saturday night (August 14) for an evening of great fun, great food, great staff, and great drink specials! NO COVER CHARGE / ALL AGES SHOW - 9pm-1am

"I heard you were performing in Springfield MO!"
Why yes, yes we are! :) We'll be performing at the Barataria Faire this coming weekend (August 7 & 8). Barataria Faire is a new "Pirate and Faerie" festival, held in downtown Springfield, MO (hear the commercial). With a huge cast and some really great stage acts listed, this is sure to be a great success! It'll be our first time, as a group, in Springfield. We are so looking forward to this weekend, and hope many of you will join us!
Adult tickets are $5, children 10 and under are free. 10am - 5pm, Sat & Sun. After the faire there will be a Pirate Pub crawl on Sat. Aug. 7, starting at 9pm. Many of the downtown pubs and clubs have live music.
Barataria Faire is located at 107 Park Central Square. Springfield, MO 65806 Get Map
Bring the family to the faire, leave the kids at home for the pub crawl, and join us for a great time!

Great time had at the Save the Treasure Chest show! Thanks to everyone that made it out! We had a blast!! A lot more pics on our facebook page!

Musical Blades on America's Got Talent?
Who knows? Stranger things have happened. So we mentioned this the other day on our facebook page when we first found out about it. As we later mentioned there, it's now been confirmed. Here's the deal, we have a preliminary audition set up with NBC execs. and the Producer of America's Got Talent this weekend. The thing is, with the contracts we are signing, we can't tell anyone whether we'll be on the show or not(!). That being said, wish us luck! If you see us on TV, we made it on the show. If we make it on the show... who knows? Is all of America ready for our brand of goofy piratey'ness? Sorry guys, that's really all we can say on that particular subject.
What we CAN SAY, however, is that tomorrow night (doors open at 5pm) get ready for the biggest, most Rocked-up Pirate event ever to hit Kansas City. The Jolly Rogers, Musical Blades, Against All Will, and The Beaumont Club (a 1300 occupancy venue) will be providing the best Shanties, Rock, Grog, and Goodwill the mid-west, perhaps anywhere, has ever seen! Once in a great while a truly special show comes around that we get to be involved in. This, the SAVE THE TREASURE CHEST show, is one of them. Not only do we get to perform with some really great entertainers, but this show is truly what it's all about. People helping people. All proceed go directly to Breast Cancer research and education, and the Susan G. Koman 3 Day for the Cure. Hear the radio spot here... More show info here.
Oh, and this just in - Musical Blades will be performing in Branson, MO at the original Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub on Saturday November 13th. I know, it's kind of a ways off, but we're pretty excited about it! It's our first time in Branson!
Don't forget to check all of our performance dates in the left column. Hope to see you at all of them! :) Come up and say hello... or YARRRR!, or something. And yea, we're still working on the upcoming CD (see below)
07/19/10
07/13/10
We're back home! ...but where are we going next? Lot's of info here!!
First and foremost a big thank you to Silver Leaf Renaissance Faire for bringing us out to Battle Creek, Michigan this past weekend. It's a beautiful Faire site, and we got to meet a lot of new friends, as well as see many old friends that we don't get to see very often. We had a great time, and hope to visit again next year! The cast, the management, the performers and the vendors were all super nice, and The Brethren of the Great Lakes, a massive group of pirates that host the Michigan Pirate Festival, treated us as if we were one of their own, during, and after Faire hours. Again, a great time was had!
So what's next? Glad you asked! :) Beyond some private parties we've got lined up, including a birthday party for one of our entertainment directors wife, our next big performance has the potential to be the biggest "concert style" event we've ever been involved with...
The Save The Treasure Chest show we're doing with The Jolly Rogers and Against All Will at the Beaumont Club (a 1300 occupancy venue) July 31st in Kansas City is a benefit for Breast Cancer research and education. We're hoping the Pirate and Rock community will show up in droves, as the more people we get the more help it provides to this wonderful cause. More info and tickets here
But that's not it, we've got a LOT MORE ahead of us! The following weekend (August 7 & 8) we'll be performing at the Barataria Faire in Springfield, MO.
(Note: The Barataria Faire takes place the same weekend as the now canceled Brownville Nebraska Renaissance Festival that we were scheduled to perform. Word has it, as we were asked to perform it, that Brownville may still have plans to do one, two hour Pirate Cruise sometime on that Saturday night. But as things still seemed a little "up in the air" at the time, we decided to cover our bases and accept a full weekend gig offer at the Springfield Barataria Faire instead.)
The Barataria Faire is another first for the Musical Blades and we can't wait to meet everyone! So yea, if your in the area, or feel like a drive to Springfield (close to Branson, MO), we'd love to see ya! We're told this is a Pirate Faire, so it should be lots of fun. We're also told there's to be lots of Fairies there as well.... Hmmm, pirates AND fairies? This could get interesting...
Then, the weekend following Barataria (Sat. Aug 14), we'll be making our return to one of the most incredibly fun pubs we've ever performed, Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub and Restaurant! It feels like home away from home at this point. Awesome food, awesome staff, and our own Cutthroat Cookie, recently hired as a bartender there, is now in the their new TV commercial.
Also, during all of this, we're working on our next CD, entitled "Modern Day Pirate"! We're hoping, though we can't make any promises, to have a fall release. Maybe sometime during the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, which we will again be performing, all seven weekends, beginning Labor Day weekend.
We actually performed, and recorded a live version of the title track to this upcoming CD that can be downloaded for free at last.fm
Later in the year (December), look for another show at Davey's Uptown. Note: Musical Blades and The Jolly Rogers have decided to cut our shows together back to once a year, so that they don't become "been there, done that" performances to our audiences. So get ready for a change-up, this time we'll be bringing in Capt'n Black's Sea Dogges to help out. This pirate band, about to release their second CD, will be making their Kansas City bar scene debut with us, Dec 4th. Stay tuned for more info and discounted advance tickets.
So yea, we're having a blast! Join us at a show! Come on world, get your pirate on!!!

Have a great weekend everyone! Be Safe!

Musical Blades to set sail for Battle Creek Michigan
July 10th and 11th prepare for "Pirate Invasion", the first weekend theme of the Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival. This is our first time visiting this Faire, and we're coming in with guns loaded!
We've sold several CD's online to this part of the country (50 miles east of the Great Lakes), and we've had several people that are local to Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival join us at other places we perform. So needless to say we are very excited to have the opportunity to perform there!
It's quite a road trip for us, so we're ONLY doing the first weekend of this five weekend festival. And of course that just happens to be Pirate weekend. ;) See'ya soon!!
06/08/10
Shanties, Rock, Grog, and Goodwill !
By far, this is the most exciting thing we've EVER been involved in! SAVE THE TREASURE CHEST is a benefit concert for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure. A breast cancer fund raiser pirate style!
It's not new news that the Musical Blades have been teaming up with The Jolly Rogers on a couple of different occasions, but the Davey's Uptown venue we've performed at, which we love by the way, by some of our fans has been considered too small. That being said, when the opportunity presented itself to perform at the Beaumont Club, a 1300 occupancy venue in Kansas City Missouri, we jumped at it! And to top it all off it's for a great cause.
A good friend of Albert's (Capt. Patch - Musical Blades) lost her life to breast cancer, so this concert really hits home for us. As with our last benefit concert, all proceeds, including all the bands salaries, go directly to the cause.
Here's the kicker... Musical Blades and The Jolly Rogers will be opening for rock band, "Against All Will". If you haven't heard of this band yet, you soon will. Their first single, "All About You", is just recently getting radio airplay throughout the country, and we're hearing they have a big following in the Kansas City area, so make sure you get tickets early. Here's the bands credentials - Jimmy Allen (ex Puddle Of Mudd co-founder), Jeff Current (Seven Story Drop), Cello (Soulfly), Steve Wilson (Dead Kennedy’s).... Yea, this is going to be an AWESOME concert!!! Oh, and by the way, it's an all ages show!
We're hearing that a concert announcement may soon be pimped on local radio station 98.9 The Rock, and maybe even a front page story in Kansas City based magazine The Pitch. This is going to be huge! Tickets will be sold through ticketmaster, but I'm also hearing discounted "hard" tickets may in fact be available at our show at Davey's Uptown on Saturday, June 19th.
Complete details are coming soon, and I don't believe tickets are yet available at ticketmaster, so check back often here at musicalblades.com or visit our facebook page to stay in the know.
And by all means come out and see Musical Blades and The Jolly Rogers at Davey's Uptown on Saturday, June 19th. Tickets are still available! Click here for more info and discounted advance ticket sales!

Last weekend of GSLRF 2010 and lots'o FYI
Time flies when you're having fun. The Greater St Louis Renaissance Festival brings its 2010 Spring Festival to a close this weekend. And trust us, all the entertainers there will be going out with a bang! Come out and join us, four shows daily on the Pirate Ship stage, and also look for impromptu street performances, as well as the Pub Sing at 5:30 daily featuring Chuey from Musical Blades and Bill from 3 Pints Gone.
What's next?! Our show with The Jolly Rogers at Davey's Uptown fast approaches. Just a little over two weeks from now. Remember, the show sold out when we did it in February, so try and get your tickets early to assure your spot. The last one was good, and incredibly fun, but both groups know what to do and what to expect this time around. This show will most assuredly be bigger and better!
Plan on new material by Musical Blades and the the Jolly Rogers, as well as what might be the new CD release party for the JR's! It's also Chuey's birthday! Also, as many of you might recall, we've hinted about something piratically special taking place on July 31st in the Kansas City area. Expect news of this to surface at Davey's Uptown as well. July 19th at Davey's Uptown is going to get crazy! Save a couple of bucks, get your tickets early here!
After that, if all goes well, we may in fact start working on our new CD, tentatively titled "Modern Day Pirate", before setting sail for Michigan and our first time ever at the Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival on July 10th and 11th (Pirate weekend). Oh, and we were pleasantly surprised to see that there were several patrons from Michigan that drove down to the St Louis Fest this last weekend. Can't wait to see them again, as well as meet a whole slew of new friends!
We are also soooooo looking forward to the Brownville Renaissance Festival and Pirate Riverboat Cruise in Nebraska (Aug 7 & 8). Which has now been expanded from two Riverboat Cruises, to five!! With the Saturday night Cruise being adult only... Don't quote me, but I believe each Pirate Cruise is two hours long, and tickets for the cruise are $30 each. Though I think buying a ticket to the cruise entitles you to free admittance into the festival. See their web site for more information as it is made available.
And yes, after that we'll be doing Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub again on August 14th, and we're also trying to find it in our schedule to perform at O'Malley's Irish Pub in Weston MO again. Stay tuned....
We're having an incredible year so far, thank you guys/gals for all the support!
05/25/10
BIG MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND COMING UP!!!
Musical Blades will be performing this Friday night in Illinois at a private party, then at the Greater St Louis Renaissance Festival on Sat, Sun and Mon, four shows a day on the Pirate Ship Stage (plus impromptu street performances throughout the day), and Saturday night at Maggie Malone's Irish Pub in Wentzville, MO (St Louis Suburb) with the "3 Pints Gone" band!
Unfortunately we sold out of our new CD, "High Sea's Drifter" last weekend, but our new shipment just arrived! So we'll be stocked and ready for the long Memorial Day weekend!
It looks like the weather is going to be great this weekend, come on out to the Greater St Louis Renaissance Festival!... and/or even Maggie Malone's Irish Pub on Saturday night.... And by all means come up and say hello!! :)

NEW SONG on last.fm
Finally! The new song, Modern Day Pirate (Live @ Waxy O'Sheas), is now, as promised, available as a free download at Last.fm. They were having problems with their up-loader, so it took a little bit.
When at last.fm simply search Musical Blades. It's in our "re-mixed" album. Or follow this link.

YAAARRRR!!!
This just in... Musical Blades will be performing the weekend of July 10th and 11th in Michigan(!) at the Silver Leaf Renaissance Festival! It's their "pirate" weekend and our first time in Michigan. Can't wait!! Due to this sudden change in plans, our Waxy O'Shea's (Kansas City) Irish Pub show, scheduled for July 10th, has been rescheduled to August 14th. being rescheduled. Stay tuned...
We've also been re-signed to perform the entire seven weekend run at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, beginning September 4th! ...Awesome!
And though we can't leak the official word yet, set aside the date, and expect something Piratically BIG in the Kansas City area on July 31st!
Presently we are out on the road, having a great time! We've just completed our best weekend ever in Wichita, followed by weekend one of OKRF, the Castle, in Muskogee OK! Though we're fairly new to this faire, once again we were welcomed with open arms (literally), and OMG, the pub sing at this place is insane!! We have one more weekend in Oklahoma before we head off to St Louis, and the Greater St Louis Renaissance Festival, located in the suburb Wentzville.
We've got all kinds of new surprises this year. If you're in the area, stop by to see our show! ...and by all means come up and say hi! :)

So what's next? Glad you asked! This coming weekend (April 24th & 25th) we will be performing in Wichita, KS at the Great Plains Renaissance Festival. It marks the start of our Ren-Fest season! Can't wait to see all of our friends again!
We'll be out on the road for the next seven weekends (see dates and venues in the left column). Wichita, Muskogee OK, then off to St Louis for four weekends. But when we return to Kansas City, get ready for the biggest Pirate event of the summer...
On June 19th join the Musical Blades and The Jolly Rogers as Pirates Invade Davey's Uptown... Again!
Save two dollars on advance tickets, available here.
This event SOLD OUT when we did it in February. Get tickets early to assure your spot!
That being said, it's looking to be an incredibly fun year! Stay tuned for more surprises...

A FUN NIGHT!! For a Good Cause!!
Join us THIS Saturday night (April 17th) at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub in Shawnee, KS. as we perform a benefit concert for friend of the Musical Blades, burn victim Tim McCarthy.
This brave gentleman reached into a burning car to pull the driver out, saving the drivers life, while injuring his own.
A true hero, McCarthy suffered second- and
third-degree burns on his hands and a forearm. His injuries prevent him
from working, which has caused a financial hardship on his family.
McCarthy DOES NOT have short-term disability insurance and his wife is
pregnant with their first child.
There will be a $5.00 door charge and a silent auction, as well as a donation jar passed around. All proceeds, including the bands salary, will go directly to Tim McCarthy and family to help with living expenses and medical bills.
Waxy O'Shea's also has great food and drink!
Performance starts at 9:00pm
Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub & Eatery is located at...

FAQ
Lots of questions have been
asked, all are answered below. Any other questions, just ask…
Q: What time should
we arrive to ensure good seating? Is this a bar with tables or more of a
theater with seats, or will we be standing near the stage in a Pirate
Mosh Pit?
A: Doors
open at 7pm - Performances start sometime between 8:30 and 9, and will
continue until around 1:00am There are very few tables and seating on
the performance side of Davey’s Uptown, it’s mainly just an open room
with a stage and a bar. As with the last time we performed there, people
will probably be standing all the way up to the stage
Q: Are the guys
wearing their pirate gear or 21st century clothes? How many attending
are wearing costumes?
A: We
(Musical Blades) will be in pirate garb, and I think the Jolly Rogers
will be as well. If I had to guess I'd say roughly 75% of the people
coming will also be dressed as pirates
Q: Will there be
bodice diving for tips? If so I will be sure to set my bodice at half
mast or lower for your diving pleasure. It is much harder to dive if I
wear a t-shirt.
A: Though we won’t be "passing hat", of course gratuity is accepted, as well as appreciated, and bodice diving is fun! :)
Q: Are we allowed
to video and photograph? I would like to add more images to my
collection used for my personal pleasure. :)
A: Though
we can't speak for the JR's, we're all about it!! Indeed, bring the
cameras! We're going to :)
Q: How do I get my
ticket(s) that I’ve purchased?
A: If you
have purchased tickets online, or directly from
Davey’s Uptown, note these ARE NOT physical tickets, your name has been
put on the guest list. Just mention your name at the door. If you have
ordered tickets online, all those tickets will be listed under the
purchaser’s name (unless you have specified otherwise during the time of
purchase).
Q: How late can I
purchase tickets?
A: Unless
we have a sellout, tickets will be available online up until Midnight on
Friday February 12th (This Friday!). These tickets are $8
each.
