Shapeshifters......
The story is probably as old as time it's self. Shapeshifters, oh no
not just werewolves..... I'll explain shortly. From what I can conclude
werewolf stories originated in Europe with tales being told of werewolves
from Germany. Take for instance on of the many tales told of Countess
Elizabeth Bathory of Transylvania (you remember her, she was one of the
models for Bram Stoker's Dracula), tis true a vampire some say, but many
believe she was a werewolf. Her own diaries documented her killings of 612
virgin women. You should remember though the tale of shapeshifters goes
far beyond that of werewolves. African tribes told of leopard-men. Ancient
Native American legend speaks of shapeshifters that move to and from bird
form. Mayan and Aztec lore tells of a deity who could transform himself
into a mighty fire breathing cat. And in ancient Greek myths you may
recall shapeshifters were called Lycanthropes, which means wolf-men.
The point I'm trying to make here is that it wasn't just a small
portion of the world with a certain religion, at a certain point in time
that was believing in humans taking the form of, well, something else.
Today we fear not the werewolf, or any other shapeshifter for that matter.
It seems after things are made highly publicized we tend to take them
lightly. In 1886 English novelist Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Dr. Jekyl
and Mr. Hyde, the famous tale of good and evil entities residing in the
same man and, alas, the rest is history. Shapeshifters are no longer real,
just a story, the kind you would tell small children by an open campfire.
Hmm, yes, it is that type of reasoning that helps us sleep well at night.
And if that's what does it for ya then so be it.

And then came Hollywood.........

Did Hollywood ruin it? Have they actually made it so that there's
nothing scary about werewolves anymore? Well yes but I think it has a lot
to do with the day in age that we live in. We just don't scare as easily
as we used to. But will that stop us from watching them? No of course not,
we've just grown used to the idea of werewolves. Think to yourself for a
moment. If you heard on the 6 o'clock news that a werewolf had been
spotted and was accused of the mauling of a young girl would you be
surprised? Think about it for a moment. Nah, you might be horrified of the
girls death, you might be somewhat in disbelief of a werewolf having done
the horrific crime. But after a couple of days in the news you probably
would not be surprised that a werewolf actually existed and has indeed
done what they say has happened. Gullible aren't we?.....

......We are told from day one that these types of
creatures don't exist. That they are nothing more then tall tales. But
deep down inside we know that these legends have started somewhere, and
that it's quite possible they started from truth. And although that truth
is bound to have gotten a bit twisted through the years it must have
stemmed from something that holds a little weight. And that something,
although you may tell yourself is impossible, could still exist today. How
many unexplained murders or maulings have there been? Quite a few I assure
you. How many calls do you think your local police department receives
about sitings of werewolves each year, and are only dismissed as pranks?
More then you'd like to know I'm sure.
Scientists seek an answer.......
It seems scientists at Baylor University claim they've
found a gene responsible for an extremely rare disease that may be the
source of ancient werewolf legends. I know, your thinking to yourself,
"this is were it gets interesting", no not really. This disease, that is
only found in a very small percentage of human kind, causes people
to grow thick hair all over their body. The disease is called
congenital
generalized hypertrichosis , and it seems these scientist are calling
it an atavistic genetic defect, a mutation that brings out a gene that has
been suppressed over generations of evolution.
Am I suggesting that these people are really werewolves?!
Hardly, it's just another time that scientist are trying to come up with
some kind of answer for the unexplained. Werewolves ARE REAL, and there's
a lot of people out there that know it.
Do I really believe this way? Do I really think a werewolf
could be lurking outside my window even as I type this on a dark, partly
cloudy, full moon night? Nah...... I'm just trying to get your attention
:)
Even the man who is pure in heart
And says his prayers by night
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the moon is pure and bright
